slated for April 24

Special to The Journal

On Tuesday, April 24, at 6:30 p.m., cancer survivors from all over the county will gather at South Luverne Baptist Church for a dinner to celebrate another year of surviving many different types of cancer.

&#8220We have names for almost 200 cancer survivors in Crenshaw County,” Patsy Owens, Crenshaw County Relay for Life Survivor Committee Chairman, said.

&#8220These people have survived anything from minor skin cancers that were detected early and were cured with little or no treatment to other cancers that required several rounds of chemo or radiation treatment.”

Each year various churches in the area join together to prepare this dinner. All of the food and supplies for this event are donated by individuals and churches.

According to Owens, she has never been turned down for anything she has asked for to make this dinner a success.

At the dinner, survivors will be asked to sign the 2007 Survivors' Banner that will become a part of the county's Relay history.

&#8220As we look at the banner from previous years, we are saddened by those who have lost the battle, and we take a moment to remember them,” Owens said. &#8220At the same time, we are encouraged by those who have signed the banner each year since Relay began in Crenshaw County. These survivors give hope and encouragement to each other and to those who support Relay for Life.”

At the conclusion of the dinner, the group will be entertained with some music featuring local talent.

If you are a survivor and would like to attend the dinner, please call Patsy Owens at 335-6788. You may also call to submit the name of a survivor who might not be on the county's list.
