It took the Georgiana Panthers just five and a half minutes to score a touchdown against the Hillcrest-Evergreen Jaguars during Thursday night's spring game and then it took less than two minutes for the Panthers to score again en route to a dominant victory, 44-13.

&#8220I just want to congratulate the community of Georgiana for all their support,” Georgiana Principal and interim head coach Joseph Dean said. &#8220These young men showed football in Georgiana is alive and well.”

The Panthers got on the board first when Andre Paige connected with Terrance Matthews for a 30-yard touchdown and the again for the two-point conversion.

After holding the Jaguars three-and-out, the Panthers struck again following a 50-yard pass to Victor Marshall when Ronald Scott scored from five yards out.

The Panthers once again held the Jaguars to three-and-out before Paige hooked up with Marshall again, this time from 40 yards out for the score.

Georgiana once again held Hillcrest-Evergreen to three-and-out before the Jaguar defense was able to make a stand, thus setting up the first score of the night for the home team.

Although Georgiana gave up the first score of the night midway through the second quarter, the Panthers were not done scoring and added another touchdown with less than two minutes remaining in the half when Paige connected with Zebbie Mitchell from 20-yards out.

&#8220With Andre Paige, the sky is the limit,” Dean said.

With a 28-7 lead going into the third quarter, the Panthers wasted no time getting on the board as Paige connected with Matthews once again, this time for a 50-yard touchdown.

Johnnie Whatley added the two-point conversion with a big push from the Panther offensive line to make the score 38-7.

After Georgiana held Hillcrest-Evergreen once again, the Jaguars made a push to the endzone when Quinton Neville stripped the ball and carried it 60 yards into the Panther redzone.

However, Marshall intercepted the next pass from the Jaguars in the endzone and returned it 10 yards to end the Hillcrest-Evergreen drive.

In the final quarter, the Panthers threatened to score again when Paige hooked up with Chris Shows for a 40-yard pass, but the drive stalled inside the 10.

An interception by Donald Scott would give the Panthers the ball back in Jaguar territory and Paige connected with Damien McIntosh to give Georgiana their final score of the game.

Hillcrest-Evergreen added a two-yard touchdown run with less than a minute to go in the game to cut the Panthers' margin of victory to 31.

Now that Georgiana's spring practice is over, Dean said he will begin searching for a replacement as athletic director, head football coach and head baseball coach.

As to rumors that Dean might take over the football head coaching position after such a successful spring, he said it simply won't happen.

&#8220I have a superintendent in Mike Looney with a vision of bring back superior education to Butler County,” Dean said. &#8220If I were to wear the duel hat of principal and head coach, I would come up short on one end or the other and that would not be fair to these kids.”
