Petrey United Methodist Church hosts April wedding

On April 14, 2007, Mr. Kevin Hinshaw, grandson of Mrs. Valeta Spradley of Petrey, and Ms. Ipek Gurdere were united in marriage at 3 p.m. at Petrey United Methodist Church.

Mayor Curtis Petrey united the couple in marriage, and nuptial music was provided by Mrs. Nancy Petrey, soloist and pianist, and by Mrs. Jamie Taylor, flutist.

A reception followed at the Petrey Community Center.

The couple now resides in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

On Thursday, May 3, the LBWCC Luverne Center hosted the Jhoon Rhee Taekwon Do ceremony.

Nine students received their gold belts.

A reception followed the ceremony.

On Thursday, May 3, Ms. Ashley Meadows took her Spanish II students of Elba High School to Monterrey’s Mexican restaurant in Elba, Ala., at 11:30 a.m. to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, a Mexican holiday widely celebrated in Mexico and in the United States.

Approximately 30 students were in attendance.

On Saturday, May 5, the LBWCC Luverne Center hosted the U.S. Citizen’s Council honoring high school senior honor students from Highland Home School, Luverne School, and Brantley School.

Senator Quenton Ross was the guest speaker for the ceremony.

Greetings and opening remarks were made by Dr. Ed Meadows, Probate Judge Jim Perdue, Assistant State Superintendent Craig Pouncey, Crenshaw County Board Member Bertha Jones, and Crenshaw County Superintendent Kathi Wallace.

Devotional and prayers were given by Rev. Charlie Sankey, Jr., and closing remarks were made by U.S. Citizen Council President Charlie Johnson and Vice-President Jannie Day.

A dinner was served following the ceremony.

On Sunday, May 6, Mrs. Laura Elliott attended the homecoming services at Shady Grove United Methodist Church.

Descendants of the Trotter family gathered at the home of Mr. Peavy Trotter of Shady Grove for a visit following the church ceremony and lunch.
