The Ninth Annual Father-Son golf tournament at Cambrian Ridge will take place Saturday and Sunday and a record-number 240 players have registered to play.

Cambrian Ridge Sales and Marketing Director Danny Foster said this weekend's tournament will be the largest in the nine-year history, growing from 13 teams in 1999 to 120 teams this year.

The tournament has grown so large that 20 people are on a waiting list hoping to get into the tournament and Cambrian Ridge has had to ship in 20 carts just to have enough.

Foster said this weekend's field includes players ranging from 10-70 years old while also representing 13 states, including California and New York.

With the high number of players playing in this year, the impact the tournament will have should be economically huge for both Cambrian Ridge and the city of Greenville.

&#8220What a major impact on our city,” Greenville Mayor Dexter McLendon said of the tournament. &#8220This is THE weekend for Cambrian Ridge and the city of Greenville.

McLendon, who has played in the tournament several years, said this weekend's tournament is a great opportunity to showcase the city because many golfers who come and play go back to their native city and share their positive experiences.

&#8220Once they come, they'll want to do it again,” McLendon said.

With the tournament coinciding with Memorial Day weekend, Foster said the opportunity for a father and a son to get away and play some golf is too much for some to pass up.

&#8220It is just a bond between a father and a son to get to play golf together and a great opportunity for the older father and sons to spend some time together they normally don't get to,” Foster said.

Several of those native father-son duos include the four Norman brother.

Todd will be playing with son Cody, Mike will be playing with son Sam, Steve will be playing with son Paul and Joby will be playing with son Michael.

David Hancock and his son Sanders will also be representing Greenville in the field.

&#8220What better way to spend a weekend than playing golf with your son,” McLendon said.

Players have a practice round they can play Friday and the tournament will begin with an 8 a.m. shotgun start Saturday. There will be another shotgun start at 1:30 p.m. Saturday and then another double-shotgun start at 8 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Players will be fed lunch both days and dinner one day.
