With less than a month to go before school starts, Greenville High School may have found a new basketball coach in Delton Robinson.

&uot;I’ll be recommending him as a special education aide and also as head basketball coach,&uot; said Butler County Superintendent Mike Looney.

&uot;He’s got some energy, enthusiasm and the characteristics of a coach that Kathy Murphy and I were looking for.&uot;

Robinson will replace Ernest Hill, who resigned from Greenville to take a position at Spanish Fort.

Hill coached the Tigers for only a few months, as he was appointed head coach after Victor Smith was relieved of his duties in March.

Robinson has had a variety of basketball experiences before coming to Greenville.

He is a graduate of Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tenn., where he also served as an assistant coach.

Robinson also played in the NBA Development League in Europe for a time.

&uot;Delton has some unique experience in that he played in the development league in Europe,&uot; Looney said. &uot;He has experience playing basketball, and we want to make sure that our coaches have credibility.&uot;

&uot;It’s great to say ‘I’ve been there, and I know what it takes’,&uot; Looney continued.

Besides his experience in the world of professional and college basketball, Robinson has also worked with high school students before.

He has had jobs in Dallas County and Bibb County, and he served as a head basketball coach in both of those systems.

&uot;I think he’s someone that can motivate students,&uot; Looney said. &uot;He seems to be a not-in-your-face kind of coach.&uot;

&uot;He talks with dignity and respect, and he expects it in return,&uot; Looney continued. &uot;That’s the kind of mentality we look for in a coach.&uot;

It is expected that Robinson will be formally hired at the Butler County Board of Education meeting Thursday night.
