A routine traffic stop by two Georgiana Police officers ended with one man being charged on several drug charges

According to Chief James Blackmon, Derrick Dewayne Langford, 27, of Mobile was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana first degree, possession with intent to distribute and may face other charges after forensics completes its investigation.

Officers David Scruggs and Isaac Ward were on routine patrol near the Jr. Food Mart when they watched Langford drive by in his 1999 GMC Yukon.

Scruggs said he had his music going so loud that it shook the patrol car.

&#8220When they stopped him at approximately 10:45 a.m., they discovered he was operating the vehicle with a suspended license and with no insurance,” Blackmon said. &#8220They noticed that he was acting jumpy and nervous so they asked for consent to the search the vehicle.”

Alabama State Trooper Jeff Spivey and his canine partner, Arco, were called to scene, the chief said.

&#8220When they searched the vehicle they found a variety of drugs including Estacy, which is a date rape drug,” the chief said. &#8220They also found a large quantity of cash totaling approximately $10,000 in the vehicle and on his person.”

The chief said the street value of the drugs seized is approximately $12,000.

&#8220The officers arrested him and placed him in the Butler County Jail, and we impounded his vehicle,” he said. &#8220We also have reason to believe that he was in Andalusia and was passing through.”

Blackmon praised his officers for their observations and for following their instincts.

&#8220These officers were trained to be observant of criminal activity and because of that, they made the case,” he said.

Both officers agreed that had Langford simply turned his music down as he passed through Georgiana, he would have likely gone by them without incident.
