Georgiana only county team left

When the season began, who would have guessed that the Georgiana Panthers would be the last team left playing in Butler County?

I’ll be the first to admit I didn’t.

Let’s ask another question.

How many of you thought they would have beaten a team that was ranked No. 6 in the state to stay in the playoffs?

I’d wager not too many.

Once again, I rank among the non-believers, as evidenced by the pick I made last week in this column.

This week Georgiana plays another top-10 ranked team when they face off against Cottonwood.

If you would have asked me a week ago if Georgiana would win, I would have told you they didn’t have a chance.

After the 17-0 beatdown of Loachapoka, I’m inclined to believe they can.

In last week’s game, the defense was more dominant than they have been all season, and the offense found the endzone a couple of times near the end of the game to put it on ice.

Georgiana showed last week what they’re capable of.

My only concern heading into this week’s game is consistency.

Will the Panthers be able to keep up last week’s momentum against Cottonwood?

I’m starting to believe.

The Bears have a good team, no doubt.

But wasn’t Loachapoka a good team?

If the team that showed up against Loachapoka shows up against Cottonwood, the Bears will have their hands full.

I expect Harmon Field will be packed, and the Panther faithful will be out in force to watch Georgiana pull out a close one against Cottonwood.

Georgiana 22, Cottonwood 17

Current high school record: 26-15
