Well, the football national championship game is over.

Most of us saw LSU put a beatdown on Ohio State, which makes the second year in a row the Buckeyes have been dominated by the SEC.

However, this column is not going to be about football because that’s almost all I’ve talked about for the last four months.

College football is over, and let’s be honest, do many people around here care about the NFL the way they do the college games?

Didn’t think so.

I think it’s time to move on to college basketball.

It’s been a very active year already for basketball, although much of it has been overshadowed by the crazy college football season.

One of the trademarks of the football season was the every underdog was a threat to pull the upset each and every time.

This is always the case in basketball.

Take a look at all the huge upsets that have happened so far this year.

Most of the shockers have come to us from the Atlantic-Sun Conference.

First of all, Gardner-Webb beat Kentucky in Lexington by 16 points in November.

After a couple of months, this upset has become less shocking as we’ve seen Kentucky struggle time and time again.

Belmont followed up with a win over the University of Cincinnati Bearcats.

To me, one of the biggest upsets so far was Mercer’s 15-point win over USC.

USC has gone on to show that they are a very good basketball team, especially with freshman O.J. Mayo, but to have the Mercer Bears ruin their home opener was unforeseen.

The great basketball hasn’t been limited to the Atlantic Sun and major upsets.

Just the other night, Clemson played against North Carolina, and took the Tarheels to overtime.

UNC needed a last-second three-pointer to win over the 19th-ranked Tigers.

Would it have been a huge upset if Clemson won?

No.

Was it great basketball?

You bet.

While we’re talking basketball, I’d just like to talk a minute about Butler County Night in Troy.

The Butler County Troy Alumni Association, Greenville Motor Company, Norman-Blackmon Motor Company, Jimmy Gardner and Terrell Enterprises all sponsored a deal where Butler County residents could get a voucher to buy one ticket and get one free.

I was pleasantly surprised by the turnout at the game by both Butler County folks and just regular Troy fans.

The entire McKenzie basketball team was there, and from talking to head coach Miles Brown, it seemed like they had a great time.

It was made even better by the fact that Troy won.

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone that made it happen, and I look forward to more events like it in the future.
