Sarah L. McMullan

Sarah Lester McMullan, a native of Greenville and a resident of Mobile for the past 63 years, died on April 23, 2008 surrounded by her family. She was a former member of the First Baptist Church of Greenville and a 1945 graduate of Greenville High School. Sarah was the daughter of late Dewey and Ruth Bodiford Lester and the granddaughter of the late George and Hettie Rhodes Bodiford of Greenville.

She was a niece of the late Mamie Bodiford and Eleanor Bodiford Giles of Greenville.

Upon moving to Mobile, she worked in the Finance Dept. of Brookley Air Force Base.

In 1956, she and her husband, Paul McMullan Sr., established McMullan Construction Company Inc. Until her passing, Sarah served the family business as secretary and interior decorator. She was a longtime and faithful member of Moffett Road Baptist Church where she was one of the founders of the Joy Club for senior adults and served as general secretary for the Sunday School.

Sarah also served as an officer for the Mobile College Ladies Auxiliary.

Survivors include: husband of 60 years, Paul McMullan Sr.; two sons, Buster (Paul Jr.) and his wife Jackie and Tommy McMullan, all of Mobile; three grandchildren, Brooke McMullan Edmondson (Terry), Meredith McMullan Meadows (Terry), Meredith McMullan Meadows (Todd), and Paul McMullan III (Taralyn); three great-grandchildren, Trey and Lucy Edmondson and Clara Meadows; three sisters, Ruby Lee Lester Willett and Frances Lester Kendrick of Mobile and Louise Lester Church of Montgomery; two brothers, George Lester Sr. (Betty) of Tanner Williams and Robert Lester of Billings, Montana and cousins, nieces and nephews. The memorial services were held from the Moffett Road Baptist Church in Mobile on April 28 with Dr. Terry Cutrer as officiant.

Musicians were organist Louise Bond and Dr. Paul Gully.

Floral designs of white hydrangeas, white orchids and grapevine, which greeted family and friends throughout the church, were created by Beckham’s Nursery and Florist of Mobile.

The honorary pallbearers were Chester McIntosh, William Bridges, Lester Helton, Tommy Giles, Richard Nooney, George Lester Jr. and Dr. Albert Coker Jr. Serving as active pallbearers were Paul McMullan III, Terry Edmondson, Todd Meadows, David McNeil, Jim McNeil and Darryl Jones. Memorial contributions may be made to the Joy Club of Moffett Road Baptist Church, 5555 Moffett Road, Mobile AL 36618. Interment was in Pine Crest Cemetery with arrangements by Radney Funeral Home of Mobile. The church hosted the family for lunch following the services. Sarah and her family enjoyed visits and holidays in Greenville with Aunt Mamie.
