Various and sundry thoughts on baseball

I’m always on the lookout for things that catch my attention, because you never know when that might turn into a column.

This week, three things have caught my attention, and all three deal with Major League Baseball.

Let’s start with the most serious – Roger Clemens.

He’s now been accused of having an extra-marital affair with country star Mindy McCready that began when she was 15.

He still denies it, but he issued an apology for &uot;mistakes in my personal life.&uot;

That’s as specific as he got, so what was the point?

It’s time to come clean, Roger.

Admit you did steroids, admit you had an affair and go ahead and admit to whatever skeletons may come out of the closet.

It’s the only way to save some scrap of a reputation.

Speaking of reputation on a lighter note, did you see where Alex Rodiguez’s wife said A-Rod passed out during the birth of their first child?

Poor A-Rod.

I_bet he was getting as much attention as his wife was.

She said they had him on a couch with the blood pressure cuff on him and a cold cloth to the forehead while she was trying to make sure he was OK between pushes.

Bless his heart.

I know some people are just squeamish when it comes to medical things, but not everyone is one of the most famous athletes in the world.

I can only imagine the field day opposing fans are going to have with this one.

I certainly know I_would.

It also came to my attention that the pro baseball team in Tampa Bay is no longer the Devil Rays.

Apparently they’ve had some kind of exorcism and dropped the Devil from their name.

After some research, I found out that this came about in November with the &uot;Drop the Devil&uot; campaign.

They’ve also dropped the sting ray mascot.

Now they’re just the Tampa Bay Rays, and they’ve taken up a logo with a sun ray glint on it.

How… intimidating.

The team president said it falls more in line with Florida being the Sunshine State.

Maybe this sunny new outlook is making a difference – the Rays are actually looking pretty good.

With the Cubs being another of the better-looking teams right now, it could be an interesting season.
