Hwy. 84 road work causes minor confusion

Motorists who traveled westbound on the section of U.S. Highway 84 between Opp and Sanford encountered minor confusion Monday morning.

As work continues to complete the application of a wearing layer for the westbound lanes, traffic will be reduced to one lane in the areas where work is being completed.

Orange traffic cones littered the westbound lanes Monday morning to indicate the direction motorists should travel, but not all directions were clear.

William Wofford, district engineer for the Alabama Department of Transportation, said cones and signs were properly placed, but further measures will be taken to eliminate any confusion.

“All of the cones and signs in place meet the uniform manual of traffic control devices,” Wofford said. “I will contact the project engineer and see if we can eliminate any further confusion.”

Wofford said the current asphalt application will complete the work to be done on the section of bypass.

“It is progressing along pretty quickly now,” he said. “We will try to do a better job of setting up the cones and traffic control devices to make it absolutely clear.”

Motorists are cautioned to remain vigilant while traveling in the area and to obey all traffic signs. The speed limit will remain at 45 miles per hour while construction is in progress and speeding fines will be doubled while workers are present.
