Shoppers looking for a unique gift or even just that special item for around the house might be able to find it Saturday, while also helping out a good cause.

The Luncheon Pilot Club of Andalusia will hold its Treasures-N-Treats garage and bake sale Saturday from 6 a.m. until noon at the Andalusia Area Chamber of Commerce building.

The event is one of two signature events for the Luncheon Pilot Club, which also sponsors a downtown square picnic in early spring. The Luncheon Pilot Club uses the proceeds from these events to sponsor several community-based activities throughout the year.

“We buy helmets for Community Christmas and we are co-sponsors with Project Lifesaver,” club member Esther Barrow said. “We also have a new program that we’re real proud of, called the Legacy program. Basically what we do is interview and video people who are getting up there in age a little bit and have interesting stories to tell.

“We’ll video those interviews and then file a copy at the public library and also provide copies to family members.”

The Luncheon Pilot Club also assists with the Covington County chapter of the American Red Cross, Opportunity House and Children’s Rehabilitation Services, among others.

Barrow said Saturday’s sale is always a popular event.

“Anything that we might have left over, we’ll donate to the Christian Service Center,” she said. “A lot of the things we have are new, like these cute little puppets. You would pay $5.95 for them in a store and we’re offering them for $1.50. We’re going to have good quality yard sale items, that’s why we call it, ‘Treasures.’”

If the yard sale merchandise is the “treasures,” then the bake sale is the “treats.” Some of the items available at the bake sale will include cakes, pies and homemade breads.

“We have one of our ladies in the club that always makes homemade bread,” Club President Liz Seay said. “Everybody always looks forward to getting a loaf of that.”

Barrow said the club has already collected a great deal of merchandise to sell at the event, but citizens are welcome to bring items to sell when they arrive Saturday morning.

“We’ll take stuff right up to Saturday morning,” she said. “We want to make some money, but we also want to mark the items so that things can sell. We’ll even have a special give-away box for things like pencils and pads of paper — those things are always popular, especially with parents who have school kids.

“One year we had a club member who took a bunch of baskets and decorated them and they were beautiful. Those were really popular.”

Barrow added the sale would not be possible without the help of club members and other groups.

“We’d really like to thank the Chamber of Commerce for letting us use the backside of their building,” she said. “It’s really a perfect place for us.”

“We also appreciate the local media for helping to advertise and put the word out about our events,” Seay said.
