Elizabeth Hensley

Elizabeth Turner Hensley, 97, of King’s Grant Community, Martinsville, Va., and formerly of 722 Circle Court, Martinsville, Va., died Wed., Oct. 1, 2008, at King’s Grant Health Care.
Born on July 27, 1911, in Henry County, Va., she was the daughter of the late Andrew Posey Turner and Martha Burgess Turner. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, William W. “Jute” Hensley Jr., whom she married on Jan. 11, 1941; and two sisters, Mary Turner Lacy and Emily Turner.
Mrs. Hensley was affectionately known by her family and close friends as “Sweet Pea.” She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Martinsville and the First Presbyterian Church Circle No. 4. Mrs. Hensley was a former member of the American Legion Women Auxiliary, the Rebekah Club and worked election polls for more than 25 years. She was very well known for her “chess pies.” Mrs. Hensley started making “chess pies” in the early 1950’s and continued until the late 1980’s, when she stopped after breaking her wrist.
Surviving are her son, William T. “Bill” Hensley and his wife, Frances “Fran” L. Hensley of Ridgeway, Va.; one brother, William Edward “Ed” Turner of Andalusia; one grandson, Brant L. Hensley, of Ridgeway, Va.; one granddaughter, Cheryl Hensley Carlyon, and her husband, Jason Carlyon of Richmond, Va.; one great-grandson, Jackson Richard Carlyon; three nieces and one nephew.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Sat., Oct. 4, 2008, at Norris Funeral Services Chapel with the Rev. Randy Stevens and Chaplain Paul Johnson officiating. Entombment will follow in Roselawn Abbey, Martinsville, Va.
The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at Norris Funeral Services and other times at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Fran Hensley, 400 Glen Oak Circle, Ridgeway, Va.
