Voter turn-out was high in Florala and Gantt where voters selected Robert Williamson and Missy Grissett as mayors in yesterday’s municipal elections.

In Florala, 175 more voters cast ballots Tuesday than in the August election. Eighty-eight of the 654 votes were cast as absentee ballots. Williamson, who currently serves on the city council, defeated challenger Newton Peters, 353 to 301.

“I’m thrilled that 353 folks voted for me,” Williamson said. “I look forward to uniting all of Florala. Progress is coming. I look forward to working with all of the newly elected council members and I want the citizens I have their best interests at heart.”

In Gantt, 71 percent of registered voters turned out for Tuesday’s election and promoted mayor pro-tem Melissa Grissett to mayor.

Grissett received 58 votes, or 57 percent of the 102 votes cast, while opponent Foster “Peanut Man” Norris received 44 votes.

Grissett said that she is happy with the way the runoff election turned out.

“I’m just real pleased with the results,” Grissett said. “I just want to thank everybody in the town. Everybody and everything went positive. There was no mud slinging and we’re ready and I’m ready to move the town forward. We’re going to start as soon as possible.”

Grissett said the campaign could not have gone as well if it were not for the help she received.

Norris said, “I want a recount because this is not right.”
