Lady Tigers win at regionals

The Lady Tigers rose needed to play almost two hours Saturday against Daleville at the Class 3A, Area 3 regional volleyball tournament, but pulled out the marathon win, 25-22, 24-26, 24-26, 25-23, 15-9.

Also at the tournament, Straughn lost to Bayside Academy 8-25, 14-25, 6-25, and Geneva, 20-25, 7-25, 23-25.

The win against Daleville secured a spot in the sub-state round Thursday, where Straughn will travel to face perennial power Montgomery Academy.

Head coach Lori Kinsaul said the team finished strong due to their hard work at practice.

“The girls did an excellent job Saturday,” Kinsaul said. “They were able to execute the things we have been working on in practice. The match against Daleville was very long and it lasted two hours. They were able to keep their focus and pull out a win in the end.”

Lakin Thornton was 17-of-17 in serving, had two aces, 19 assists, four digs and two kills; Tori Bracewell was 17-of-17 in serving, had six aces, one block, six digs and two kills; Tiffany Taylor was 22-of-22 in serving, had one ace, six digs and four kills; Stephanie Bracewell was 21-of-23 in serving, had two aces, 16 assists, eight digs and one kill; Kaitlynn Wiggins had one block, six digs and 11 kills; Kayla Messer was 12-of-14 in serving, had four assists, one block, nine digs and 19 kills; Katie Beck was 17-of-17 in serving and had five digs and Brooke Harris was 1-of-1 in serving, had one assist and four kills.

“We have struggled all year with tight matches and they were able to stand strong and finish the match,” Kinsaul said. “Everyone contributed to the win.”

The Lady Tigers will hit the road to play Montgomery Academy, with the match starting at 4:30 p.m.
