MONTGOMERY — The Lady Bobcats kept their match close at the regional volleyball tournament at St. James High School in Montgomery last Saturday against Clarke County, but couldn’t pull out the win, losing in one match 18-25, 17-25, 22-25.

In the second game of the match, the Lady Bobcats roared to an early 4-point lead, but Clarke County bounced back and won by 8 points.

Opp could not prolong their tournament presence in game three as it ended in a close 3-point deficit.

Head coach Christie Spurlin said the girls came out to the regional tournament and tried their best to win.

“They played hard, but I just don’t know what happened,” Spurlin said. “They made little mistakes and couldn’t pull it out. They played hard and worked hard for it. We’ll just have to keep striving for next year.”

Spurlin said her seniors on Saturday were an integral part of the team’s performance.

“Mychal (Drew), Hannah (Harrison) and Brooke (Thompson), they’re my seniors and they probably played harder than anybody on the team,” Spurlin said.

The Lady Bobcats finished 9-16 overall and 3-2 in Class 4A, Area 2. Spurlin said that the schedule was tougher this year.

“They did good overall this year,” she said. “We didn’t have a winning season, but I knew we had a tougher schedule this year. They played hard and worked hard and did a good job. There were some teams I thought we could have beaten, but overall we had a good season.”

In other action on Saturday, the Andalusia Lady Bulldogs could not keep up with the St. James Lady Trojans at the Class 4A regional volleyball tournament, losing in three games 14-25, 16-25, 17-25.

The Lady Bulldogs showed dominance early in the first game, but once they were trailing St. James, they couldn’t get back in the lead.

They were close in game three, but came out with the loss.

The Lady Bulldogs ended their season (12-14, 4-2 in Class 4A, Area 3).
