RLHS to hold 3-on-3 tourney

The first annual Red Level 3-on-3 basketball tournament will take place later this month to help raise funds for the high school’s gymnasium floor renovation costs.
The tournament will take place Sat., Nov. 22, at the RLS high school gym. The cost is $75 per team and each team may have up to four players on a team. Registration will take place the day of the tournament and will last from 8 a.m. until 8:45 a.m. before the start at 9 a.m.
Fred Kelley, RLS head varsity basketball coach and event organizer, said there has been interest in having a tournament at the beginning of the basketball season.
“We’ve had a lot of people that have expressed interest in it and it’s sort of a way to jump start the start of our season with a fund-raiser,” Kelley said. “With money being so tight and with the way the economy is, we thought we would promote the basketball program and for anybody out of school that’s not in school now.”
The tournament is open for men and women, but no current high school students are allowed to participate. Tournament rules are in a double elimination format and trophies will be rewarded to the first and second place teams.
“We have two facilities we’re going to use,” Kelley said. “The money is going to a good cause. It’s going to help us in our gym floor renovations. It’s taking a few more funds than what we had available, so anyone that could come out and play, that would be great.”
Included in the tournament will be a 3-point shooting and dunk contest, which cost $5 for entry.
Kelley added that the main focus of the fund-raiser is to “cover a lot of the expenses that have occurred.”
“We’ve just gotten to that point over the years that we’ve had to refurbish and refinish the gym floor,” he said. “We’re encouraging everyone, by way of helping us out, to participate in the tournament. We hope that this is something we can have every year.”
Concessions will also be provided.
