The Alabama Math, Science and Technology Initiative (AMSTI) Troy site recently recognized the hard work and dedication of Fleeta School teachers and administrators to quality education by naming Fleeta its “School of the Quarter.”

“This selection is based on how well the school has implemented and the progress of students,” AMSTI Troy site director Nadine Scarborough said. “Specialists who visit the school to observe the program and assist the teachers were very impressed with Fleeta School.”

Roger McLain, principal of Fleeta School, said he was extremely honored his school received the award in its first year of the program.

“We were just elated about the award,” he said. “When I was in Troy, Tuesday, they told me they could not think of anyone more deserving than Fleeta School. It was wonderful that they saw that in us.”

McLain said a number of improvements have been made to further the educations of Fleeta students, including the addition of a computer lab last summer and several renovations to the school’s science lab.

“I believe we have one of the best science labs in the county,” he said. “I don’t know of any other lab that is better. We will be adding even more equipment in the future. We intend to have what the best schools in the nation have.”

McLain said he feels technology and access to key resources are two key components to improve the quality of education for any student.

“Yes we are a county school in south Alabama, but that should not keep our students from learning,” he said. “Larger schools may have larger funds to draw from for equipment, but our students are entitled to the same level of education. We want our students to have the same access to resources. Our students will have every opportunity that any other student in the state has.”
