Elisabeth Fleming Banks, 85, of Demopolis, passed away Tues., Jan. 6, 2009, in Demopolis.
Funeral services will be held at Hayes Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, beginning at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Mart Gray officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery in Elba under the direction of Hayes Funeral Home.
Visitation will be held at Hayes Funeral Home on Saturday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.
Mrs. Banks was born in Elba on Jan. 6, 1924, to Mr. and Mrs. Ruth Parks and John Claude Fleming. She graduated from Elba High School, attended Judson College for two years and graduated from Alabama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn University) in 1946 with a degree in education. She was a member of Chi Omega social sorority.
Libba was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Elba and taught school in Covington County until her retirement.
Mrs. Banks was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Ruth Perdue of Elba and Claudean Chambers of Brundidge.
Survivors include her daughters, Gayle Merrill and husband Dr. Phillip H. Merrill of Dothan and Betsy Coplin and husband, William T. Coplin Esq. of Demopolis; one sister, Genette Kendrick of Elba. She is also survived by her grandson, Hank Merrill of Atlanta, Ga; granddaughter, Elizabeth Merrill Hargrave of Jackson; grandson, Will Coplin of Demopolis; granddaughters, Kathryn Coplin Penna of Savannah, Ga., Abby Coplin and Molly Coplin, both of Demopolis; great-grandson, Hudson Hargrave of Jackson; great granddaughters, Meryl Anne Hargrave of Jackson and Maggie Merrill and Mollie Merrill, both of Atlanta, Ga.
The family also would like to give a special thanks to the six lovely ladies who were her “sitting” angels.
Serving as pallbearers will be Hank Merrill, Will Coplin, Jeff Hargrave, Brian Penna, Jack Parker and Kenneth Grantham.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to one’s favorite charity.
