The Waits family of Covington County was introduced in last week’s column, and the lineage was outlined through the great-grandchildren of Mark and Hannah (Waits) Waits. This genealogy will be continued beginning with the next generation, which would be the great-great-grandchildren of Mark and Hannah.

First, more members of the generation of Mark’s great-grandchildren will be listed, which includes additional grandchildren of John C. and Mary Amanda Waits. Their second son, Charles Gustavus, and his first wife, Sarah Eleanor Brown, had two sons: Joseph “Joe” Marcus Jackson, b. 1882, d. 1937, m. Hattie Lee Anderson (1878-1963); and Charles G., m. Willa Mae Ballard.

Daughter Corrie Elizabeth Waits and husband, Emera Carter Kingsbery, son of Henry and Mary Parks (Walton) Kingsbery, had five children: Emera Clyde, b. 1882, d. 1966, m. (1) Sarah Maud Hardin (2) Mary Rose Rowlett; Henry Virgil, b. 1884, d. 1885; Walton Waits, b. 1886, d. 1970, m. Alpha Lee Eaton; Everette George, b. 1894, d. 1980, m. (1) Ora Nell Moore (2) Doris Dobyns Thompson; and Joseph Carl “Jody,” b. 1897, d. 1972, m. Bernice Sowell.

Son Hershel Virgil Waits and wife, Mary Fanny Dent, reared four children: Homer Virgil, b. 1898, d. 1980, m. Cloteal Aultman; Frank Dent, b. 1900, m. Louise Wilks; Corrie Elizabeth, b. 1902, d. 1936, m. Ernest H. Latham; and John Felix, b. 1904.

Son George Orkney Waits was one of the descendants to move to Andalusia. He was a lumber manufacturer and was general manager of the Bagdad Land and Lumber Company in Bagdad, Fla., at the time of his death in 1927. During his early years of marriage, he operated several sawmills in Georgia for B.P. O’Neal. While at the mill in Penia, Georgia, he and O’Neal made a trip to Sanford, Ala., to check out the Henderson Lumber Company. George decided to purchase an interest in the company and moved his family there in 1905. This was a successful venture, but in 1914 when most of the timber in the area had been cut, he took part of the company and purchased a small operation in Caryville, Fla., which he operated as Henderson-Waits Lumber Company. He later purchased the Harbeson interest in the Bagdad Land and Lumber Company and moved his family there.

George Orkney and his first wife, Harriet Permelia McIntosh, daughter of William Crosby McIntosh, had four children: James Crausby, b. 1891, d. 1948, m. Maude Vernon Shaver; George Sidney, Sr. b. 1893, d. 1944, m. Nannie Belle Shaver; Glover O’Neal, b. 1899, d. 1943, m. Mary Ida McDavid; and Lucille, b. 1905, d. 1906. George Orkney and his second wife, Virginia Manley (1903-1968), had one daughter, Virginia Orkney, b. 1825, d. 1977.

The grandchildren of Alfred P. and Mary O. Singleton include the children of their daughter, Marietta, and her husband, Will Lamb. This couple had only one child, Willie Mae Lamb. Daughter Dessie and her husband, Thompson Grizzle, had three children: Mary, Dessie, and H.T. “Buddy” Grizzle. Son Sam and his wife had one son, Sam Singleton, Jr. m. Annie Mae Weathers. Daughter Mattie Utah and husband, Robert Tidwell, had four children: Robert Tidwell, Hubert, Richard, and Mildred. Son Moses and his wife, Anna Mae Pierce, and one son, Olan Pierce Singleton.

The next several paragraphs will be the grandchildren of Alfred P. Waits’ brother, Cicero Newton Waits, and wife, Mary Alice. Their oldest son, William Lee Waits, and wife, Lilly Mae (Dill), daughter of John M. Dill, had four children: Elmer; Estelle, m. Graham ?; Wallace Lorenza, d. 1954; and Denzil Warren, b. 1907, d. 1979, m. Selena (Carlson) Waits.

The oldest daughter, Lula Estelle, and husband, Thaddeus Augustus Hagan, son of Thomas Calvin and Sarah Elizabeth (Lee) Hagan, reared four children: Forrest L., b. 1902, m. 1926 Martha Ellen Cosby; Alton Parker, b. 1903; Corrie Estelle, b. 1912, m. 1936 Heslip Hubbard Sorrells (1911-1970); and James Howard, b. 1915.

The next son, John Marcus Waits, and wife, Annie Estil Simpson, daughter of William Thomas and Eleanor Estil (Heslip) Simpson, had five children: Mary Eleanor, b. 1908, d. 1971, m. John Madison Cochran; William Almoth, b.&d. 1911; Lula Elizabeth, b.&d. 1912; Hazel Estil, b. 1917; and John Marchus Jr., b. 1920.

The next son, Woodson Morgan Waits, worked as a fireman, and he and wife, Hennie Vernon Stewart, reared three children: Eleanor Lucile, b. 1915, d. 1917; Clifford Eugene, b. 1918; and Raymond, b. 1919.

Son Charles Edward Waits was an outstanding medical doctor in Atlanta, Ga. He and his wife, Selene Carlson; ad three children: Charles Edward Jr., b. 1923; William Lee II, b. 1926, m. Jane Haden; and Edward Jones, b. 1928.

Son Julius Alberta Waits and wife, Leona Leggett, daughter of J.E. and Adrian Ella (Thames) Leggett, reared three sons: Julius Webber, b. 1923; Frederick Allen, b. 1928, d. 2004; and James Leggett, b. 1935.

Son Marvin Lovejoy Waits was a fireman in Birmingham, and he and wife, Julia Frances Middleton, daughter of Sidney A. and Mary Emma (Capps) Middleton, reared six children: Mary Frances, b. 1918, d. 1973; Lula Marie, b. 1923, d. 1973; Marvin Jovejoy Jr., b. 1925; Dorothy, b. 1927; Joyce, b. 1929; and Maurice Edward, b. 1932.

Daughter Sara Alice Waits and her husband, William Johnathan Sample, reared six children: Wilburn J., b. 1927; Marvin Edward, b. 1928; Mary Alice, b. 1929; Clifford Eugene, b. 1930; Margaret Ann, b. 1932; and Charles Newton, b. 1934.

Daughter Harriet Pamelia Waits and first husband, William Emory Holland, son of Silas Casey and Susie (Keaton) Holland, had one son, Jack Waits Holland, b. 1926.

HISTORICAL MEETING:

The Covington Rifles Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans with assistance of the Thomas Randolph Thomasson Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy will have their annual program to honor Confederate Generals Robert E. Lee and Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson on Tues., Jan. 13, at 7 p.m. in the Dixon Conference Center on the campus of Lurleen B. Wallace Community College. Both generals were born during January, and this year’s presentation, to be presented by Compatriot Francis McGowin, will feature Gen. Jackson. Anyone interested in Confederate heritage is invited to attend.
