No. 1 Andalusia’s Nico Johnson, Brandon Sims and Jamal Curry helped lead their team to a victory Friday night at home over rival Opp in the last game of the regular season, 75-39.

Johnson led in scoring with 22 points, Sims followed with 14 and Curry had 10.

The Bulldogs (21-2, 6-0 in Class 4A, Area 3) kept the momentum going the entire ball game after the Bobcats gave them a close beginning to the first quarter.

Andalusia ended up putting 24 points compared to Opp’s 13 on the scoreboard in the first quarter.

“At the beginning of the game, Opp played us a good first quarter,” Andalusia coach Richard Robertson said. “(Opp) Coach (Ronnie) Sansom has done a great job with his team. They have improved leaps and bounds.

“Five years ago, we were 3-21. Tonight, our record is just about reversed.”

Robertson added the season is not over for the team because they have a long way to go.

“We haven’t accomplished anything yet,” Robertson said. “The only thing we’ve accomplished is home court advantage. We have to take it one game at a time and try to succeed at what we want to do.”

In the third quarter, the Bulldogs jumped out ahead of the Bobcats, increasing their lead by 15 points with 3:02 left in the quarter.

And, then in the fourth quarter, Andalusia closed the game out by adding an additional 10 points to its lead.

Robertson said play in the second half was better because of a change in game plan.

“In the second half we went back to our original plan,” Robertson said. “I started a completely different bunch (in the second half), but the reason why I started the bunch (all seniors) at the beginning was because they were bigger than the bunch I have been starting.

“I did that to get ready for foul trouble and special situations. I’m working on my rotation for tournament play.”

Robertson said there are a lot of things on his team that will need correcting.

“I’m going to do a bunch of things next week,” he said. “Now, you’ve got to come up with a plan because if you come up short, your season is over.

“Now, the first round is to eliminate people. The second round is to get your pairings at where you’re going to go.”

Robertson added right now, the focus is finishing.

“The teams that are coming in here … they want to knock us off,” Robertson said. “We want to play to the end.”

The leading scorer for Opp was Gavin Free, who had 18 points.

In earlier action Friday night, the Lady Bulldogs defeated the Lady Bobcats, 54-25.

The leading scorers for Andalusia were Alexis Horton with 11 points and Chantavia Lawrence with 10.

The Andalusia B-team won their game as well, 61-18. They improve to 18-1 on the year.

The Andalusia boys and girls teams will host their area tournaments next week. The first game will be the girls team Thurs., Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. against Hillcrest-Evergreen. The boys will play Thomasville Fri., Feb. 6 at 7 p.m.
