Scoring three runs in the first inning alone, the No. 2 Pleasant Home Lady Eagles shut down No. 1 Kinston Tuesday night in Pleasant Home, 4-1.

Pleasant Home’s Kati Reeves started out the inning with a double and later scored on a RBI single from Ariel Gunter.

Gina Davis got on base with a single and Kayla Woods bunted to move runners to second and third.

With the bases loaded, Megan Cook hit a two-run double to score Gunter and Davis.

Lady Eagles’ pitcher Brentin Fuller got the win for her team Tuesday night, pitching four innings, allowing four hits, one walk, zero runs and striking out two batters.

“We had a well-pitched game out of a girl that has never been in a tough situation before,” Pleasant Home coach Jimmy Reeves said. “She came in there and pitched four shutout innings.”

In the top of the fourth inning, Pleasant Home’s Erin Byrd guarded the plate with the bases loaded as she ran down Kinston’s Agee Evans for a crucial third out.

“We made some great plays,” Reeves said. “I thought our center fielder (Megan Cook) made two great plays out there. We threw a girl out at the plate and our shortstop Brittany Ward made some good plays. We just made the plays when we needed to make them, got on top and held them off.”

The Lady Eagles (9-1, 5-0 in Class 1A, Area 3) scored in the fifth inning on a one-run single from Gina Davis.

Kinston got on board on an error in the sixth inning.

Emily Byrd got the save for the Lady Eagles Tuesday night, pitching three innings, allowing one run, three walks, five hits and striking out two batters.

The leading hitters for Pleasant Home were Erin Byrd, Kati Reeves, Ariel Gunter and Gina Davis.

Byrd was 2-for-4 with two singles; Reeves was 2-for-3 with one double and one single; Gunter was 1-for-1 with one RBI and one single; and Davis was 2-for-3 with two singles and one RBI.

Reeves said overall he was “proud” of the way his team played Tuesday night.

“We’ve got a chance to be a good team this year and I’m very proud of the way the girls played (Tuesday),” he said.

The Lady Eagles will be playing in the Straughn KLD Tournament on Thursday.

They will play Opp at 4 p.m. on field No. 1 in Straughn and then at 7 p.m. against Straughn.
