MONTGOMERY (AP) — The state high school football championships are moving out of Birmingham’s Legion Field and heading to the campuses at Auburn and Alabama.

The Alabama High School Athletic Association’s Central Board of Control approved a six-year deal Wednesday to move the Super 6 title games to Tuscaloosa and Auburn. The basketball championships will remain in Birmingham.

The cities of Tuscaloosa, Auburn and Birmingham submitted proposals in February to host the games.

AHSAA Executive Director Steve Savarese said details of the contracts are still being worked out.

The football games will rotate between Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa and Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn through 2014, starting next season at Tuscaloosa.

“This is exciting news for our schools and our children,” Savarese said. “The stadiums at Alabama and Auburn are among the best in the nation. The two cities are committed to making this event even bigger and better than it has been in the past. In addition, the city of Birmingham is pledging to make the Final 48 tournament for our basketball teams an even more memorable experience for everyone.”

The Super 6 Championships have been held at Legion Field since 1996. Before that, only the Class 6A state championship game was held there while the other five classifications played at home sites. Now, they’ll get a chance to play on the fields of the two state football powers.

“It’s outstanding for the state,” Tide coach Nick Saban said. “It’s outstanding for high school football players. It’s certainly outstanding for us to be able to host the game. We’ve got as fine a facilities as anybody in the country. It’s certainly a setting a lot of college football players grow up wanting to play.”

The basketball tournament moved to Birmingham in 1994 and alternates boys and girls in all six classes each day.
