Although the Bulldogs failed to qualify for the state tournament at the Class 4A golf sub-state tournament Tuesday in Pelham, Andalusia golf coach Daniel Bulger still said his team played its best round of the season.

“We shot a 304, which was our best round of the year and any other year,” Bulger said. “I thought a 304 would have won sub-state. We played real well.”

Alex Short was the only member of the golf team to qualify to play at the state tournament in the individual category.

Short shot a 70, Josh Atkinson shot a 75, Gillis Jones shot a 79, John Starr shot an 80 and Tyler Dooley shot an 83.

Bulger said the team overall got better towards the end of the season.

“We got better, especially toward the end of the year,” he said. “Our last three rounds we shot our best score and we improved on it.

“At the tournament, we came in first of the teams and I was pretty confident a 304 would get us in to the state tournament,” he said. “This year, it was enough for fourth place. Overall, I was pleased. Before Tuesday morning, if I knew we were going to shoot a 304, I would take it.”

Bulger said the team grew as a group this season, which in the end helped them post good scores.

“I think team wise and individually some of them could have done better Tuesday,” Bulger said. “That is as good of a score we can do as a team. It was probably as good as we could have played.”

Short will play in the Class 4A state tournament at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail in Prattville to compete for the state title.

Tee off for Short will be at 9:42 a.m. at the Capitol Hill — Legislator course on Mon., May 11.
