GULF SHORES —Straughn and Wicksburg remained scoreless until the fourth inning before the Lady Tigers scored two runs to give them the momentum to win, 7-2, in their first game of the Class 3A south regional tournament in Gulf Shores Friday.

In the fourth inning, Katy Messick hit an RBI single to score Kaitlynn Wiggins. Wiggins made it home on an error.

Kayla Teel then hit an RBI to help bring Kayla Messer home.

“We had a slow start, but we started to put the ball in play and we moved some runners over — bunted and batted like we needed to,” Straughn coach Ray Wilson said. “We scored a few runs there and played well defensively the whole game, but it’s good to get off to a good start. That’s the key now in any tournament.”

Straughn (28-8) added four more runs in the fifth inning when Messer hit an RBI single to score Kimberly Teel, which loaded the bases.

Messick knocked a two-run single to score Wiggins and Stephanie Bracewell to bring the score to 5-0. Messer later scored on a sacrifice fly.

Wicksburg scored its only two runs in the top of the sixth inning on a two-run double.

Straughn scored its last run in the sixth when Hannah Twitty scored on an RBI single from Kimberly Teel.

Stephanie Bracewell was 1-for-3; Wiggins was 2-for-3, Messer was 1-for-3; Messick was 1-for-3 with two RBIs; Tiffany Taylor was 2-for-3; and Tori Bracewell had one RBI.

Wiggins pitched all seven innings, allowing two runs, four hits and striking out 10.

Straughn will play Headland today at 8 a.m. at the Gulf Shores Sports Complex.
