Eagles rally to make state

GULF SHORES — Pleasant Home secured its ticket to the Class 1A state tournament this weekend at the south regional tournament defeating Ariton, 4-3, in the losers’ bracket on Saturday.

“We’re lucky to even be going to Montgomery,” Pleasant Home coach Jimmy Reeves said. “You know we almost didn’t get it done against Ariton, but we (pulled) it out. The kids made the plays we needed to and I was proud of that.”

Earlier that day, the Lady Eagles defeated Ariton, 5-1, in the winners’ bracket before succumbing to their first loss against Kinston, 4-2.

Kinston remained in the winners’ bracket throughout the day and made it to the regional championship, where it beat Pleasant Home, 2-1.

“We played a good game right there (against Kinston),” Reeves said. “It could have gone either way. We just wore out. We’ll regroup and get ready to go to Montgomery (this week).”

Kinston 2, Pleasant Home 1

Kinston’s Erin Shaw hit an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning with the game tied, 1-1, to score Amanda Crohn and win the Class 1A south regional championship Saturday in Gulf Shores.

Kinston scored its first run in the second inning on an RBI single from Holli Kilcrease.

Pleasant Home got on board in the first inning on an RBI single from Kati Reeves.

Erin Byrd was 2-for-3 with one run; Reeves was 1-for-3 with one single and one RBI; and Gina Davis was 1-for-3.

Pleasant Home 4, Ariton 3

Pleasant Home’s Kaitlin Brookshire hit a two-run single to score Gina Davis and courtesy runner Raven Woods in the top of the seventh inning to break a 2-2 tie, on the way to winning, 4-3.

Ariton scored one more run in the seventh on an RBI single from Ciara Baker to score Taylor Bludsworth.

The Lady Eagles scored one run in the second inning before Ariton added an additional two runs in the third.

In the sixth inning, Pleasant Home tied the game up when Kayla Woods hit a sacrifice RBI to score Erin Byrd.

Byrd was 2-for-4 with one single and one run; Woods was 1-for-4 with one RBI and one single; Kati Reeves was 3-for-4 with three singles; Brittany Ward was 2-for-4 with one double and one triple; Davis was 2-for-4 with two singles; Megan Cook was 2-for-4 with two singles; Ariel Gunter was 3-for-4 with one double, two singles and one RBI; and Brookshire was 1-for-4 with one single and two RBIs.

Davis earned the win, pitching 7.0 innings, allowing eight hits, four walks, three runs and striking out three.

Pleasant Home 5, Ariton 1

Pleasant Home’s Erin Byrd started the scoring drive for the Lady Eagles Saturday against Ariton, scoring in the first inning on an error.

Ariton managed to score its only run in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single from Anna Mangra.

In the fourth, Kati Reeves scored on an RBI single from Gina Davis.

Megan Cook scored quickly before Byrd knocked an RBI double to score Kaitlin Brookshire and earn the team’s final run for the game.

Kinston 4, Pleasant Home 2

Kinston defeated Pleasant Home for the first time this season in the third round of the winners’ bracket Saturday at the Class 1A south regional tournament.

The Lady Eagles scored one run in the first inning when Erin Byrd was sent home on an error.

Kinston took the lead in the fifth inning on an RBI single to make it 2-1.

An additional run later in the inning brought Kinston ahead two runs.

Pleasant Home’s second run came in the top of the sixth when Brittany Ward hit an RBI single to bring in Byrd and make it 3-2.

In the bottom of the sixth with one out and the bases loaded, the Lady Eagles made a double play before Kinston scored its last run of the game.
