Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) officials said Monday that about 60 families have already signed up for federal assistance after their homes and property took damage in flooding and storms during the month of March.

Don Jacks, public information officer with the FEMA Disaster Recovery Center in Andalusia, said that number is expected to rise as more individuals register for the government assistance.

Monday, FEMA announced that $1.2 million has been approved to assist storm survivors in three Alabama counties — Covington, Geneva and Houston. It is not currently known how much of that $1.2 million will be used to assist Covington County families.

Those who were affected by the disaster and believe they may be eligible to receive FEMA assistance should register at the Disaster Recovery Center, located at the county EMA office on 300 W. Watson St. in Andalusia. They may also register by visiting www.disasterassistance.gov or by calling 800-621-FEMA (3362).
