Pleasant Home, Straughn advance

MONTGOMERY – After being shut down to the losers’ bracket Friday morning by No. 1 Speak, No. 2 Pleasant Home regrouped and defeated Maplesville, 4-2.

“Anytime you get a win up here, you’re happy,” Pleasant Home coach Jimmy Reeves said. “We’re just going to be happy about it and not talk about the bad things we did and regroup and live to play another day. That’s what we came to do.”

In the first game against Speake, the Lady Eagles lost 2-1 after Speake scored one run in the second and one run in the fourth innings.

With the win over Maplesville, the Lady (32-11) will play Kinston at 9 a.m. today Field No. 5 at Lagoon Park.

Pleasant Home 4, Maplesville 2

PHS pinch hitter Robyn Weaver hit a crucial double in the seventh inning to give the Lady Eagles a chance to score the winning run.

Weaver later came in to score on an RBI single from Brentin Fuller.

In the bottom of the seventh, Maplesville threatened to gain the lead until an player interference penalty was called on Courtney Killlingsworth at first base. The runner on third moved back to second base.

Maplesville scored one run in the fourth and one in the sixth inning.

Earlier in the first inning, Pleasant Home’s Erin Byrd hit an RBI single to score courtesy runner Raven Woods.

In the second, the Lady Eagles added one more run on an RBI single from Megan Cook to score Kati Reeves. Reeves reached on a single.

The third run for Pleasant Home came in the fifth inning on an RBI single from Kayla Woods to score Kaitlin Brookshire.

Fuller earned the win pitching 7.0 innings, allowing nine hits, one walk, two runs and striking out three.

Byrd was 1-for-3 with one single and one RBI; Woods was 1-for-3 with one single and one RBI; Megan Cook was 1-for-2 with one single and one RBI; Brookshire was 1-for-3 with one single and one walk; Fuller was 1-for-3 with one single and one RBI; and Weaver was 1-for-1 with one double.

Speake 2, Pleasant Home 1

Speak’s Kylie Black helped lead her team to 2-1 win over No. 2 Pleasant Home Friday at the Class 1A state softball tournament in Montgomery.

Black pitched 7.0 innings allowing eight hits and striking out three.

Speak scored early in the second inning on an RBI single from Hannah Ledbetter that scored Sarah Belan. Belan reached on a hit-by-pitch.

Ledbetter wasn’t done in the fourth inning hitting another RBI single to score McKenzie Black.

Reeves said the team got beat the same way his team wins.

“We played a really good game the first game,” he said. “They just scattered our hits. They played good defense on us. They beat us the way we usually beat people by scattering all the hits and just kept us from getting over there.”

Ledbetter was 2-for-3 with two singles and two RBIs; and Abby Sparks was 2-for-3.

Pleasant Home managed to score its only run in the seventh inning on an RBI single from Ashley Copeland to score Ariel Gunter.

Copeland and Kati Reeves were 2-for-3 in the game.
