Local law enforcement officers had a “person of interest” in custody Friday, but no one has been charged with Thursday’s murder of Travis Sasser.

Sasser was murdered Thursday, and his bedridden wife was left to burn to death in their Odom Road home.

Chief Deputy David Anderson said, “We do have one person of interest detained, and I can confirm that this person is not related to the victim.

“Mr. Sasser died from blunt force trauma to the head, but it is unknown at this time what exactly was used,” Anderson said. “Several items were recovered from the scene that could have caused his injuries – a couple really, but I can’t say which one definitively.”

Sasser and his wife, Merita, were found shortly after 8 a.m. when a caregiver arrived to find the home located in the northern part of the county in flames.

Law enforcement found Sasser locked inside one of the bedrooms, dead in a chair. His wife was pulled from the burning home and life flighted to a Dothan hospital center for smoke inhalation.

Anderson said no word was received on her condition.

At present, a motive has not been determined, he said, adding that family members arrived Friday to begin an inventory of the home to determine if anything is missing.
