Sheriff Dennis Meeks said Monday he expects an arrest “in the near future” in the beating death of Travis Sasser.

Travis Sasser, 75, was murdered Thursday, and his bedridden wife, 72-year-old Merita Sassera, was left to burn to death in their Odom Road home. Mrs. Sasser, who was pulled from the burning home and Life Flighted to Flowers Hospital in Dothan where she was treated for smoke inhalation, has been released into the custody of her family.

Meeks said the “who’s and why” behind the crime are still under investigation.

“When something like this happens, there’s a lot of information that’s out there,” he said. “Over the last several days, we’ve been pulling it all in. At this point, we’re still trying to link it all together. We’ve interviewed several people. We do have one ‘person of interest’ in custody, but he is being held on violation of probation warrants. He is being questioned in connection with the incident.”

Meeks said the identity of the person was not being released at this time, “because the investigation could take off in another direction tomorrow.”

On Saturday, law enforcement personnel questioned another “person of interest” at an apartment complex outside of Gantt. That person, who was not identified, was questioned and released.
