MONTGOMERY — Fourth-ranked Straughn clawed its way through the losers’ bracket Saturday to finish as runner-up in the Class 3A state championship to No. 6 West Morgan, 2-0.

West Morgan’s Lauren Seibert pitched her fourth straight shutout of the tournament against the Lady Tigers.

Before the championship game against West Morgan, the Lady Tigers (36-10) started the day defeating Sumiton Christian 4-3 in the first game, and then rose above Pisgah 4-1 to get the win in the losers’ bracket finals.

West Morgan 2, Straughn 0

West Morgan’s Seibert pitched 7.0 innings, allowing four hits, zero runs, zero walks and striking out 14 batters to help lead her team to the state title.

In the third inning, Delissa Tidwell scored on a passed ball; and in the fifth, Hannah Harris scored on an RBI single from Jamie Rohr.

Straughn had plenty of opportunities during the game with runners on base in the first and third innings, but could not take advantage.

“In this game it was a little bit different than last year’s because we were in it,” Straughn coach Ray Wilson said. “We were tired (Saturday) and I still think even in the last inning if we could keep it within two runs, we had a chance. I told them you can say what you want to about (my team), but one thing you can’t say is that they don’t have heart. I’m proud of them.”

West Morgan’s Rachel Harbin was 2-for-3 with two singles; Rohr was 1-for-3 with one RBI; and Tidwell was 0-for-2 with one RBI.

Straughn 4, Pisgah 1

Straughn’s Kaitlynn Wiggins allowed six hits, one run and struck out seven to help lead her team to a 4-1 victory over Pisgah.

Wiggins was also 2-for-2 at the plate.

Katy Messick was 3-for-4 with two doubles and one single; and Tori Bracewell was 2-for-4.

The Lady Tigers answered early in the third inning by scoring four runs.

Kayla Messer hit an RBI triple to score Wiggins; Messick hit an RBI single to score Messer; and Tori Bracewell and Messick came around to score on a two-run double from Tiffany Taylor.

Pisgah scored its only run in the seventh inning on an RBI single from Taylor Shrader.

Straughn 4, Dadeville 3

The Lady Tigers managed to start the day Saturday on an early scoring drive in the fourth inning, where Messick and Tori Bracewell each scored on a fielder’s choice.

Straughn added two more to the board in the sixth when Bracewell and Kayla Teel scored on an error and passed ball.

Dadeville scored two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth.

Teel was 2-for-3; Messick was 1-for-3; and Bracewell was 1-for-2.
