Opp voters reaffirmed their commitment to local education Tuesday, as they voted overwhelmingly to renew a 5 mill ad valorem tax for Opp City Schools.

The final tally for the vote was 350 in favor of renewing the tax and 61 rejecting the renewal.

The tax was one that had been collected for 60 years, but has to be renewed every 30 years, in accordance with law. Its renewal will allow the Opp City Schools to continue to collect a total of 12 mills in ad valorem taxes.

The tax brings in an estimated $175,000 annually for Opp’s three schools. The new 30-year cycle is effective Oct. 1, 2009.
