Federal stimulus money has “paved” the way for at least four new resurfacing projects in Covington County, said Bill Wofford, district supervisor for the Alabama Department of Transportation.

However, to date, there is no new federally funded road construction slated for Covington County, he said.

“As many know, we’re finished with the last resurfacing contract we had with the completion of U.S. Hwy. 84,” Wofford said. “That was a major undertaking. There have been a few questions about new construction projects because of stimulus money. The answer is there aren’t any scheduled.”

He said the county is slated to see some bridgework in 2011 and 2012.

“Other than that, I can say that we’re going to start some new resurfacing projects in January,” he said. “We’ve got a resurfacing project on State Hwy. 55 North, another section of (Hwy.) 55 in River Falls at the intersection to Red Level up to the point where the current construction is now.”

Also scheduled to be resurfaced are a section of U.S. Hwy. 84 West in Conecuh County to River Falls, the bypass in Andalusia from Kentucky Fried Chicken to Hardee’s, and the entire portion of State Hwy. 137 from the Florida line to Hwy. 29.

“It’s not really a great deal of money involved like there is with new construction,” he said. “But we’ve got some roads that are in bad shape, so these projects are welcome.”
