Golf has been more than just a game for Andalusia senior Alex Short.

This Friday, Short will graduate from AHS and will start the next chapter in his life. Short recently competed in the Class 4A AHSAA state golf championship in the individual category.

Short said his time at AHS has been enjoyable and fruitful.

“It was always fun for me,” he said in a telephone interview. “We always had a lot of fun on golf trips.”

Earlier in his high school career, Short had been to the state championships twice before, placing second in his sophomore year.

Growing up, Short said golf has always been “fun” for him.

“I started when I was about 9 or 10 years old,” he said. “It’s always been a fun game for me and I’ve always liked to play.”

Short said his play at the state tournament all came down to putting.

“I hit just about every wedge and every club in the bag,” Short said. “Everything except my putter was almost perfect. My coach (Daniel Bulger) and I along with my dad (Alex “Lex” Short) were talking about the round and we all agreed if I had putted well, I would have been in the running for it.

“I did the opposite of this at the state tournament on the second day,” he said. “I was two or three over going into 17, which was a par-5, and I didn’t have but a 3-iron into it and I went for it. It was kind of stupid because I ended up making double (bogey) from the rough.”

Short said the tournament would have been better if his short game was better.

“That’s all it was,” he said. “I hit the ball better than I did all the four years those two days, but I couldn’t make anything (on the green).”

Next year, Short will be attending Lurleen B. Wallace Community College while working on playing golf.

Short is the son of Alex “Lex” and Susan Short and the brother of Auburn University senior Sara Catherine and Andalusia Elementary School rising first grader Ada, all of Andalusia.
