Straughn honors athletes at spring banquet

Straughn held its sports banquet Tuesday night to honor the Lady Tigers softball team and their success this past season.

The Lady Tigers, for the second time in a row, finished as runner-up at the Class 3A state tournament.

During its successful run at state, Straughn defeated defending state champions Pisgah twice, 3-2 and 4-1.

This season, the Lady Tigers finished with a 36-10 record and special awards were given to players in recognition of their accomplishments this season.

Katy Messick received the academic award; Tiffany Taylor and Stephanie Bracewell were named team captains; Kayla Messer received the most valuable offensive player of the year award; Kayla Teel received the most valuable defensive player of the year award; Kayla Messer received the highest batting average award; and Kaitlynn Wiggins received the “belly down” award.
