My father and I wish to express our most heartfelt thanks to everyone who had a part in the Honor Flight of May 2. Thank you to Tonitta Sauls, president of Covington Region Honor Flight, and each of the board members, to those who contributed so it could happen, to the doctor, nurse, EMT and so many more who gave of their time to honor our veterans and make this trip a success. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Your kindness, support and planning made a long day’s trip comfortable, enjoyable and memorable for those you honored.

My father was truly touched by all that happened that day, from the honor and respect shown by the volunteers when we arrived in Opp, to the patience and kindness of airport security that had prepared to receive this group. All of us felt a tug at our hearts when busy airport passengers would stop and applaud these men, or strangers would come up with a big hug and a “thank you.” Any one who took part in this event had to be touched and humbled by the respect and gratitude shown by all who passed this worthy group of veterans.

The WWII memorial seems to have yielded a special peace to the veterans who saw it. I know my father found something special there. He found recognition of his sacrifice and thanks for a job well done. But more than that, he found contentment that a wall of gold stars stood to let all know how many gave the ultimate sacrifice.

For myself, let me say, “thank you,” for allowing me to be a part of this special day with my father. For us, it was a day of sharing, long overdue and not soon forgotten. It was my honor to accompany him and my privilege to see just what this monument meant to him. I will always be humbled as I remember seeing him and the many other veterans tour this memorial to the “greatest generation.”
