The first ever Straughn High School summer basketball camp will take place today and Saturday in the SHS gym.

Eleven teams will play a total of 40 games during the camp.

Teams include Straughn, Brantley, Red Level, New Brockton, Daleville, Kinston, Georgiana, Elba and Pleasant Home.

The game format for the camp will be two, 20-minute running clock halves, with a few modified rules.

Camp coordinator and SHS coach Todd Reynolds said the camp is designed to let the teams get better.

“It’s simply a chance for teams to get some game time in and to get better,” Reynolds said. “In the summer league, the teams stray away from having that instinct to win. You can win every game in the summer, but that doesn’t mean anything when the season begins.”

Reynolds said he plans to make this camp an annual event.

“I’ve been fooling around to have it the last two years, but we made it this year,” he said. “I’d like to thank Garretts Grocery and Little Caesar’s pizza for being our sponsors. If you want to come out and get your fill of basketball in two days, come out and watch.”

Admission to the camp is $3 per person per day and concessions will be available. That fee covers all day.

The camp will start each day at 9:40 a.m. and lasts until 9:40 p.m.
