MFG Galileo Composites will move into its new building in the Opp Industrial Park by the end of this month, weeks ahead of its initial mid-July moving date.

The company, which is located in a 40,000-square-foot spec building, will soon be selecting its 30 start-up employees, Opp City Planner Don Childre said Monday during the regular city council meeting.

“Right now, we’re almost finished with a few modifications they asked for on the building,” he said. “We’ve added a 4,000-square-foot office space and 1,600 square feet in bathrooms and dressing rooms. Installation of the sprinkler system is under way. They will be in the building by the end of June.”

The company has already begun moving equipment into the building, he said.

“This company builds huge radar domes and dishes,” he said. “It’s a very high tech company. If you’ve watched the Discovery Channel and seen those round buildings in Antarctica, Galileo built those.”

Childre said the company currently has government contracts from countries around the world.

“And they’re housed in our spec building in Opp, Ala.,” councilman Mickey Crews said. “One of the things that is credited with their selection of Opp as a new home was the ready-made spec building.”

Negotiations will the company began more than a year ago. Upper management visited Opp, leading to the city’s selection over a city in Texas.

It is not known how the move-in change will affect the start of operations, which had been tentatively set to begin September.

MGF Galileo Composites is a sister company of MFG Alabama LLC, also located in the Opp Industrial Park.

voted to close the alley known as the lumber drive of the old Thompson Building Supply store, located at the rear of the old Covington Manor site.

proclaimed June 22-28 as Amateur Radio Week in Opp. Ham radio operators announced they will hold the Amateur Radio Field Day exercise on June 27 and 28, a 24-hour emergency encampment exercise and demonstration of skills. The event will be held at two locations: Lake Frank Jackson State Park in Opp and on Padgett Road in the Carolina community.
