The South Alabama 14-and-under softball team was knocked out of the Babe Ruth Southeast Regional tournament Friday in Andalusia, losing to Northside, Fla., 9-1.

“They showed up cold and they’re leaving cold,” South Alabama coach Royce Bass said. “We just couldn’t get the bats going all day long, but they didn’t quit. They fought to the end and you know, we’re headed home.”

Earlier Friday, Pitt County, N.C., defeated South Alabama 4-1.

South Alabama’s Payton Mitchell scored the only run for her team in the second inning on an RBI single from Kenna Edmundson.

For Pitt County, Logan Sutton, Taylor Matkins, Courtney Gould and Katarina Hudson all were driven home in the first inning.

The winning pitcher was Pitt County’s Alecia Gurkins.

Bass said the difference in the loss was “errors.”

“We started out with some errors on defense,” Bass said. “We made a few changes in the field. In the final six innings, we had them at no runs and we scored one, but came up short.

“We did everything we could then do, but we couldn’t get back in the game.”
