South Alabama’s A.C. Riley hit a pair of two-run singles in her team’s third game of the day Friday afternoon to help her team to a 11-0 victory over Marshall, Tenn., at the 2009 Babe Ruth 16-and-under Southeast Regional tournament. That win advanced South Alabama in the losers’ bracket.

“I think (Friday) we played three complete games,” South Alabama coach Tommy McDaniel said. “It’s been solid defense and pitching.

“I think we showed a lot of character right there coming back after the loss (Friday),” he said. “We played three games (Friday) and that’s always tough. Anytime you win 11-0 in five (innings) in this type of tournament is a good win. I was very pleased once again of doing this.”

In South Alabama’s first game, Kaitlynn Wiggins helped her team to a 2-0 victory over West Ashley, S.C.

South Alabama would suffer its first loss of the day during the second game against Henderson, N.C., losing 2-0.

“I thought we played well in that first game,” South Alabama coach Tommy McDaniel said. “I thought we were a bit nervous at first, but we settled down and we played real well. I was really pleased with the team today.

“We had very good defense with no defensive errors,” he said. “Offensively, like I said, we were a little nervous and we had swung at some bad pitches early, but settled in. Our pitching was outstanding. Kaitlynn did a good job pitching. Getting game one in the South Regional tournament is huge for us. I was real proud of them.”

South Alabama will play winner of the Ocala-West Ashley game at 2 p.m. today.

South Alabama’s Paige Caraway hit the first two-run single of the game in the first inning, scoring Stephanie Bracewell and Kaitlynn Wiggins.

Caraway then crossed home plate on an RBI single from Keri Hyde.

Riley helped usher the last two runs of the inning in on her single that scored Kayla Messer and Hyde.

In the second inning, Tiffany Taylor hit an RBI single to bring in Caraway, Riley hit her second two-run single to score Messer and Taylor and Bryna Wadsworth finished the inning with an RBI double.

South Alabama added two runs in the third inning on five hits.

Caraway earned the win for South Alabama, pitching 3.0 innings and allowing two hits, five walks and zero runs. Wadsworth pitched 2.0 innings and allowed one hit.

South Alabama 2, West Ashley (S.C.) 0

Wiggins pitched 7.0 innings, allowing two hits, two walks, zero runs and striking out 11.

South Alabama’s runs came in the second and third innings.

In the second, Kayla Messer was driven in on an RBI single from Tiffany Taylor; and in the third inning, Stephanie Bracewell scored on an RBI single from Paige Caraway.

West Ashley’s Donica Newton earned the loss for her team, giving up two runs, five hits, two walks and striking out six batters.

South Alabama’s Stephanie Bracewell was 1-for-4 with one triple and one run; Kaitlynn Wiggins was 1-for-4 with one triple; Paige Caraway was 1-for-4 with one single and one RBI; Kayla Messer was 0-for-3 with one run; Tiffany Taylor was 1-for-3 with one single and one RBI; and Keri Hyde was 1-for-3 with one single.

Henderson (Tenn.) 2, South Alabama 0

Henderson’s Taylor Lawrence and Morgan Adcock brought in the only runs for their team in the win over South Alabama.

Lawrence and Adcock scored in the fourth inning.

McDaniel said despite the loss, his team played with a lot of “heart.”

“I thought that that was one of the better pitching performances I’ve seen this summer,” he said. “Our kids competed at a high level and played with a lot of heart (Friday).

“Our hats go off to their pitcher,” he said. “Their pitching was better than we were, but I’m proud of the way we competed.”

Henderson’s Jordan Garrett picked up the win for her team, pitching 7.0 innings and striking out 14 batters while allowing no runs, four walks and no hits.
