A Gantt man who fled to Florida is now in custody after he allegedly broke into a Gantt home and raped a female occupant.

John Michael McCarthy, 42, was arrested Friday and charged with third-degree burglary and first-degree rape, Gantt Police Chief Chris Byrd said Monday.

Byrd said due to the nature of the crime, neither the victim’s identity nor specific circumstances surrounding the alleged crime would be released. However, he did say the crime occurred in June and McCarthy fled to Hillsborough County, Fla., shortly after the incident.

“The warrants were issued (then) for (McCarthy’s) arrest, but McCarthy had to be extradited from Florida to face these charges in Alabama,” Byrd said.

Byrd said McCarthy has an “extensive criminal history” and is currently being held without bond on a violation of probation order in the Covington County Jail.
