S. Alabama finishes 2-2

The Ocala, Fla., 16-and-under Babe Ruth softball team defeated South Alabama Saturday at the Babe Ruth Southeast Regional tournament in Andalusia, 6-0. With the loss, South Alabama was eliminated.

South Alabama went 2-2 for the tournament, starting out Friday by defeating West Ashley 2-0, losing to Henderson, Tenn. 2-0 and winning against Marshall, Tenn. 11-0 to advance in the losers’ bracket.

“We ran up against a good Ocala team,” South Alabama coach Tommy McDaniel said. “Anything can happen. I thought our kids played hard in the tournament and I had fun with them.

“It was the most fun I’ve ever had,” he said. “I thought they competed and represented Covington County and Andalusia really well and they knew how to put this tournament on in a great way.”

In Saturday’s game, South Alabama and Ocala went scoreless until the second inning when Ocala’s Alora Thompson drew first blood, hitting an RBI double to score Gabby Valentin.

Thompson later came around in that inning on an RBI single from Stephanie Cameron.

In the fourth inning, Ocala added two additional runs when Holly McKinnon and Jena Whitt came home on RBIs from Whitt and Thompson.

In the fifth, Caylee Underwood scored on an RBI single from Brooke Bennett.

Ocala’s last run came in the sixth inning on another RBI single from Whitt.

Ocala’s Caylee Underwood was 0-for-3 with one walk and one run; Brooke Bennett was 1-for-3 with one single and one RBI; Miranda Anderson was 1-for-3 with one single; Nikki Day was 1-for-3 with one single; Holly McKinnon was 1-for-3 with one single and one run; Gabby Valentin was 1-for-3 with one single and two runs; Jena Whitt was 2-for-3 with one single, one triple, two RBIs and one run; Alora Thompson was 2-for-3 with one double, one single, two RBIs and one run; and Stephanie Cameron was 1-for-1 with one single and one RBI.

South Alabama’s Kaitlynn Wiggins took the loss, pitching 5.0 innings and allowing five runs on eight hits and five strikeouts.
