The Challenger Sports British Soccer camp is again coming to Andalusia and will start next Mon., July 27, and last until July 31.

Campers ranging in ages from 3 to 14 years old will participate in a camp that caters to different levels of skill.

“We have about 30 kids signed up already,” said Barbara Tyler, Andalusia youth sports coordinator. “Some kids are coming from Greenville and Luverne.”

Campers from 3-to-4-years-old will be a part of the “First Kicks” camp; campers from 4-to-6-years-old will be a part of the “Mini-Soccer” camp; campers from 8-to-18-years-old will be a part of the “Full-Day Player Development” camp; campers 6-to-14-years-old will be a part of the “Golden Goals” camp; campers 6-to-16-years-old will be a part of the “Half-Day Player Development” camp; and all ages will take part in the “Team Camps.”

The mini soccer camp for 3-to-5-years-old costs $78; the half-day camp for 6-to-9-years-old and 10-to-14-years-old costs $102; and the full-day camp for 8-to-14-years-old costs $148.

Tyler said she discovered this soccer group at a conference and decided it would be a good thing for Andalusia.

“I basically met this group at a conference and they came down and talked to us about a camp,” she said. “We were looking for something to give our players since not a lot of people know about soccer in the South and so we wanted to offer something for the kids.

“The city does not make any money on this,” she said. “It’s strictly paying to bring Challenger down here.”

Tyler said, despite the high cost of the camp, campers will get every penny’s worth next week.

“Part of the nice thing about this camp is that the numbers aren’t so huge, so these kids are more than likely to get a good quality instruction,” Tyler said. “It just gives kids a head start on their soccer season.”

Last year, Tyler said the number of attendees was a lot higher than when the city first hosted it the previous year.

“In our first year we had just a handful,” she said. “Last year, we had two instructors come down and we’re going to have two this year as well. They pretty much train overseas and they then come over here. It’s been nothing but good reviews we’ve had of the instructors that we’ve had. They are very positive with the kids.”
