At the Lower Alabama Auburn Club’s annual scholarship dinner Tuesday night, newly hired Auburn University offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn said he will be leading a fast-paced offense this fall.

“We’re going to have a fast-paced offense,” Malzahn said. “We’re also in store for a balanced offense.

“You’ll also see misdirection in the passing game and we’re going to cut the defense down,” he said.

More than 250 people attended the annual dinner held at the Andalusia Country Club.

The county’s alumni chapter recognized local students who received scholarships.

Malzahn said Auburn head coach Gene Chizik has a great support staff behind him on the sidelines.

“Coach Chizik has put together a great staff,” he said. “The best thing about our coaches is that they’re great people.”

Then, Malzahn spoke about each player that he thought would stand out when fall camp starts next month.

“One thing about this fall is that we will get better with each game,” Malzahn said. “We’ll be very consistent on the field. We know this system works and we’ll get better as each game of the season goes on.”

Lower Alabama Auburn Club president Nancy Eldridge said the dinner went well and the total amount of scholarship money awarded to the students is tremendous.

“I’m thrilled we had in excess of 250 people here,” Eldridge said. “The students amassed in excess of $145,000 in scholarship awards. We’re definitely looking forward to next year.

“And, I’m glad we had (Auburn mascot) ‘Aubie’ and a couple of cheerleaders here with us,” she said.
