Lauren Powell became the third person in her family selected as Junior Miss when she was named Covington County’s 2010 Junior Miss on Saturday night.

Powell’s sister Allyn was the 2008 Covington County Junior Miss, and her mom is also a former Junior Miss. She is the daughter of Roger and Cathy Powell of Andalusia.

Half of the judging procedures for Alabama’s Junior Miss preliminaries are “behind the scenes” in scholastic achievement (20 percent) and the judges’ interview (25 percent). Onstage presentations include talent (25 percent), self expression (15 percent) and fitness (15 percent).

The new Junior Miss also won in the self expression, talent and interview categories.

Tallly Morrow, the daughter of Kay Huggins and Daniel Morrow, was named first alternate.

Amber Anderson, daughter of Bridges and Victoria Anderson, was second alternate and winner of the fitness award.

The scholastics award went to Courtney Bass and the be your best self award, an essay contest, went to Kaitlyn Holley. The spirit of Junior Miss award went to Amber Thomas, who was selected by her peers.

Judges for this year’s event were Carmen Bosch of Daphne, Tiffany Hill Newsom of Grove Hill, Janice Know of Troy, Mae Carole Hill of Grove Hill and Gerald A. Anderson II, D.M.D., of Selma.

The Covington County Junior Miss organization awarded $8,500 in cash tuition scholarships. In addition, participants and winners are eligible for a number of college-granted scholarships from Lurleen B. Wallace Community College, Troy University, University of West Alabama and Faulkner University.
