Back to school already?

At Andalusia High School’s “Class Days” Tuesday, early birds may not have gotten any worms, but they did get convenient parking spaces and lockers.

Tuesday morning, the junior class began its sign-ups at 11 a.m., but dozens of members of the class began lining up as much as a half hour before. The students received their class schedules and also purchased parking spots and lockers. Those who signed up first got the coveted school lot parking spaces, and top lockers.

AHS junior Lauren Goins said she wanted to be one of the first in line.

“The last two years I’ve been in one of the bottom lockers, and you have to squat down to get to them so it’s hard,” she said. “I’m happy to get one of the top lockers this time.”

Students registered for the upcoming year based on seniority. Seniors began arriving at 9 a.m., followed by juniors at 11 a.m. and sophomores at 1 p.m. Freshmen will have their “class day” today at 9 a.m.

AHS junior Rob Maddox said he had not yet checked where his parking space was located, but hoped it was in one of the nearby school parking lots.

“That’s where you want to be,” he said. “If you’re in the stadium lot, you have a longer walk to get to the building and it’s a little more crowded.”

Maddox said he could not believe school would be starting in less than two weeks.

“Summer has blown by incredibly fast,” he said. “I spent most of my summer playing baseball and it made the time just fly by.”

The first day of school is Mon., Aug. 10.
