Marty Robbins Roofing of Dothan has been awarded the bid for replacing the roof on the Covington County Courthouse.

Commission Chairman Lynn Sasser said the Dothan company was the low bidder when proposals were opened on July 23. The company’s $339,058 bid was approximately $100,000 less than the lowest bid submitted the last time the project was bid.

The commission is paying for the roof with proceeds of a 2005 bond issue for capital improvement projects. Commissioners hope they can replace the roof and install an elevator with the $540,000 left in the bond issue the county can spend on the project.

A clause in that bond issue required the funds to be spent within three years, or by the end of November 2008. The county got special permission to extend that deadline, and voted in December to use the funds for courthouse improvements.

In other business, the commission:

Agreed to let bids for video cameras to be placed in the vehicles of sheriff’s deputies. The county has received $32,685 with which to purchase the cameras.

Agreed to request bids for credit card services. County administrator Brenda Petty said at present, only the probate judge’s office is set up to accept credit cards. A number of offices collect fees from the public, she said, adding that electronic options need to be added in each of those offices.

Entered an agreement with the Alabama Department of Transportation for the construction of a turning lane and industrial access road from Hwy. 84 to Nano Materials at the South Alabama Regional Airport. The state has awarded $296,200 for the project, which engineer Darren Capps said should be completed within a year.

Heard from Ruth Edson, director of the Covington Area Transit system, who reported that the county’s matching portion of the transit budget for the 2010 fiscal year will be between $45,180 and $75,580. While the budget figure could be as high as $75,580, she expected to have local contracts, which reduce the county’s cost for operating the system.
