The organizers of Opp’s annual Mizell Memorial Hospital Foundation gala hope the adage “laughter is the best medicine” will bring in partygoers at its annual fund-raiser, set for Aug. 13.

This year’s featured performer will be Bob Farmer and the Farmers’ Almanac, said foundation chairman Ted Roquemore.

“There’s nothing quite as relaxing as a good laugh,” Roquemore said. “Scientific research even proves that laughter has the ability to heal, improve the immune system, decrease stress and provide a physical workout.

“Feeling good, that’s how we want people to leave after hearing some ‘Bobservations,’ which translates to Bob’s observations,” he said.

This is the foundation’s fifth annual gala, he said. It is also the foundation’s largest fund-raiser of the year.

Rich in American heritage and steeped with tradition, the Old Farmers’ Almanac is one of the oldest, most respected publications in the nation. Farmer brings this national treasure alive with his unique style and humorous storytelling.

“People can expect plenty of down home, family-style humor through anecdotes, remedies, and stories from the official national spokesperson of the Old Farmers’ Almanac,” he said. “Bob’s style is described as a good mix between Will Rogers and Jerry Clower.”

A native of Louisville, Ky., Farmer is a member of the International Society of Storytellers and was sponsored by Zig Ziglar in joining the prestigious National Speakers Association more than 20 years ago.

In addition to traveling the nation and entertaining, educating and motivating all types of audiences, Farmer also writes articles published in the almanac, a source of reference for weather predictions, planting advice, and moon cycles since 1792.

Roquemore said proceeds from the night’s event will support efforts of the foundation, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, to focus on growth of services to the community, such as the new Mizell Wellness Center that opened earlier this year. As a non-profit, 80 percent of the ticket price is tax deductible.

And as usual, the Rainer twins will provide musical entertainment during dinner, he said.

Dinner begins at 7 p.m., followed by entertainment at 8 p.m.

Coordination of the event is through the generous donation of time and activities by volunteers from the community, he added.

“We are blessed to have so many in our area willing to help make this event something to look forward to each year. We are grateful for all the support, whether through sponsorships or individual ticket sales. It all makes a difference,” he said.
