Alumni game this Thursday

The Andalusia Bulldogs will fight for bragging rights Thursday night in the fifth annual Andalusia High School alumni football game.

For the past three years, the alumni have had the upper hand on the field, winning each game since its inception.

The alumni game is held every year as a fund-raiser for the football program at AHS.

Tickets at the gate are $5 per person.

Andalusia coach Perry Dillard said former head coach Tom Causey came up with the idea for the game.

“Originally when coach (Tom) Causey was here four years ago, he did something very similar at his high school and so he wanted to kind of create a similar thing here at Andalusia,” Dillard said. “So, one of the first guys he talked to was John (Jones) and then maybe Lucky Cope to put this together and then it just kind of blossomed from there.”

Jones and Cope are former Andalusia Bulldogs.

During the game, there will be a $1,000 giveaway to a ticket holder at the game.

Dillard said this game is the biggest fund-raiser for the team each year. Last year, the team made approximately $5,000.

“It’s a huge fund-raiser for the football program,” he said. “It’s also there for people to meet the players. At Andalusia, we have a tradition of excellence and that’s just a part of our school and sometimes it’s good to get in touch with your tradition with all of those guys that played here.”

Jones, who graduated from AHS in 1977, was a defensive end and linebacker and said the game is for the players.

“We’re really out there for the players,” Jones said. “We’ve never had any scuffles. It’s all in fun.”

AHS junior linebacker Johnny Jones said the game plan for the players is to “win.”

“Just to win and keep the defense tight and not get beat deep,” Johnny Jones said. “And to take care of our responsibilities.”

The game will be played in a 7-on-7, two-hand touch format with two 20-minute halves.

Dillard said that he has gotten a lot of interest from people through Tuesday.

Gates will open at 5:30 p.m. and players need to report at the stadium by 6:15 p.m.

Kick off is at 7 p.m.
