Andalusia hopes to repeat its spring game success against Elba tonight as the Bulldogs travel to face Class 2A Elba in a preseason jamboree.

AHS coach Brian Seymore said the game would consist of the team working through the basics.

“We’re gonna go out there and work on the fundamentals, our alignments and schemes,” he said. “We’re not going to do too much, but we’re going to give some of our young kids some reps on both sides of the ball.

“The game presents itself as a good opportunity to play the younger kids early in the season.”

In the spring game earlier this year, Seymore said the defense especially played well in a 28-0 win. The Bulldogs also beat Class 3A Luverne 27-0 in that spring contest.

“We played well in the spring game,” he said. “Especially the defense played well against them. The first play of the game, the defense ran it back for a touchdown.

“So, we’re not going to change much from what we did in the spring.”

With any jamboree game, it gives an opportunity for the players to go full speed on players other than their teammates. Seymore said his kids are anxious for the chance to face an opponent.

“We’re still an option-based team and the kids are looking forward to hitting players other than themselves,” Seymore said. “This is a good tune up for the Straughn game (on Aug. 28). I hope we can use it to our advantage.”

Seymore added that the game tonight is a good way to assess his team in the “talent” arena.

“A jamboree game is a good way to evaluate your talent,” he said. “It gives you a chance to see them on the field as well as on film.

“In the end, the film ain’t going to lie. It’s a good evaluation process.”

Injury updates

Recently, the Bulldogs have had multiple injured players to contend with.

Seymore said most of them are “day-to-day.”

“Adam (Zelensky) has full range of motion in his arm, but there’s still some discomfort,” Seymore said. “I’d say he’s doubtful for next week.

“With Johnny (Jones), there is some swelling down in his knee. He had lateral meniscus surgery in the spring.”

Seymore said Jones’ swelling might have been contributed to scar tissue in his knee.

“(Jones) is being reevaluated and he’ll be day-to-day,” he said. “We’re hopeful on him coming back.”
